Sunscreen on your face every day, rain or shine, sounds crazy right? Not really. I am a huge believer in using SPF on my face every single day, no matter the weather or the amount of time I’ll be spending outside. The benefits of using sunscreen daily are huge, and no matter your age – if you start today your skin will look more youthful and clear as you get older. If you start young enough, you’ll look like you’re in your 30s at 50.

Check out one of my personal favourites.

Wearing sunscreen doesn’t mean you have to be pasty white. There are plenty of amazing self-tanning options, both low and high-end; and if you’re nervous about trying self-tanner, don’t worry, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide to help you.

If you have any doubts about whether wearing sunscreen is worth it – here are 5 reasons to prove that it definitely is:

Prevents Skin Cancer

This is the most obvious – yet by far the most important reason. Skin cancer has been on the rise worldwide, partially due to the breakdown of our ozone layer, and partially due to the rise in popularity of beautiful bronze skin. About 132,000 cases of invasive skin cancer are diagnosed each year. Sunscreen helps prevent skin cancer (melanoma) by blocking the harmful UVA and UVB rays that cause it.

The risk of skin cancer is not worth a temporary bronze glow. Besides, you can get a colour just as beautiful by using self-tanner.

Note: people of all skin tones are at risk of developing skin cancer, although most cases are reported in fair-skinned individuals, reports of skin cancer in those with dark skin-tones are on the rise.

Prevents Wrinkles

Did you know that 80% of visible wrinkles are not actually caused by ageing but by sun damage? I know you don’t see any wrinkles when you’re 21 and invincible, but one day you’re going to and you will wish you protected your face earlier.

In cultures where wearing sunscreen and covering your face is commonplace, people maintain a youthful appearance much longer than in places where people savour a golden tan. No matter your age now, as you get older you will notice a huge difference between people who spent years laying around in tanning beds and those that were cautious around the sun.

If you want any more proof than that you can check out the picture below of a truck driver who drove around for 28 years with the sun beaming on only one side of his face. The difference between the half of his face exposed to the sun and the half-hidden from it is staggering.

Prevents Brown Spots

This is another one to appeal to your vanity – but if you want your complexion to stay clear and youthful you will want to avoid brown sun spots. The same UVA and UVB rays that cause cancer and wrinkles are also the culprit behind this affliction. Sunscreen helps shield your face and prevent them.

Sun is damaging even on a cloudy day

UVA and UVB rays can penetrate through clouds. They also penetrate through glass. Stay safe and wear sunscreen even when driving (see above) or when it’s cloudy.

There are more choices than ever

There are so many choices of sunscreen that at this point wearing it is a no-brainer. It comes built into moisturizers, foundations, and BB creams. There are types specifically for dry skin, oily skin, and everything in between. You’re guaranteed to find something that works for you, so start using it.
